Winter Sports in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is a year round destination, and as soon as the snow starts to fall, the mountain areas become a winter wonderland. There have been ski resorts in Uzbekistan since the Soviet period, but recently winter sports in Uzbekistan have grown rapidly, with hundreds of millions of dollars in investment. The brand new Amirsoy Mountain Resort in Tashkent Region opened in 2019, offering world class facilities to skiers and snowboarders alike.

Winter sports in Uzbekistan began to develop during the Soviet period. Avid skiers and mountaineers realised that the slopes of the Chimgan Mountains in Tashkent Region were well suited to both downhill and cross country skiing, and the powder is some of the best in the world. Recent investment in this area — which is part of the UNESCO Western Tien Shan — has upgraded facilities and increased the opportunities for all kinds of winter sports, making Uzbekistan a veritable adventure playground for winter sports lovers from across Central Asia and beyond.

The best ski resort in Uzbekistan is Amirsoy Mountain Resort. Run by Andorra-based PGI Management, it has been designed and built to the highest international standards, and will continue expanding over the next few years. There’s already a super 5* hotel called Le Chalet by Amirsoy, multiple lifts, and runs for skiers of all standards. You can hire top quality skiing and snowboarding equipment, take lessons in the well run ski school, and also try family-friendly activities such as tubing and snow mobiling. The apres ski at Amirsoy is fun, too, with cocktail bars and restaurants popping up across the ski resort in giant igloos!

Near to Amirsoy are two older ski resorts, Chimgan and Beldersoy. Chimgan is a multi-activity resort popular with local families, and in addition to skiing you can horse ride and rent snow mobiles and quad bikes.

Beldersoy has a single seat chairlift, which offers stunning — if slightly nerve wracking — views across the mountains. More importantly, it also has one of the area’s main helipads, so is the perfect starting point for heli skiing.  Heli skiing is one of the most extreme sports you can do in Uzbekistan, and it’s only suitable for advanced skiers who are confident skiing off piste. Local company Asia Adventures can charter Mi8 helicopters for groups, and will also provide experienced heli ski guides and safety equipment. Flying by helicopter over the snow covered Chimgan Mountains is a breathtakingly beautiful experience, even if you don’t intend to ski, and is one of the highlights of winter tourism in Uzbekistan.
