Legend has it that Hazrat Ali himself, the son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad and the fourth caliph, visited Shokhimardon. It is a place that is referred to as ‘Lord of the People’ in Persian, which is actually a reference to Ali. Before his assassination in Iraq, he instructed his followers to bury parts of his body in seven graves in different cities, one of which is believed to be in Shokhimardon. This makes Shokhimardon a sacred place and home to the Hazrat Ali Mosque and Mausoleum. Today visitors can see the reconstructed Hazrat-Ali Mosque and Mausoleum, which were destroyed during the Soviet era of religious persecution.
Beyond its religious and cultural significance, Shokhimardon also boasts natural wonders such as Lake Kulikubbon, or ‘Blue Lake’, which lies 170 metres above sea level and reaches 170 metres long, 60 metres wide and 5 to 10 metres deep. Visitors can take a two-kilometre cableway to reach the lake. To get there, be ready for a scenic drive that will take you over Kyrgyz territory. The 55-kilometre journey south from Fergana is full of stunning landscapes and magnificent vistas that will take your breath away.
Whether you are a nature lover, adventure seeker or history buff on a cultural pilgrimage, Shokhimardon offers something for everyone. Pack your bags and get ready to discover this hidden gem in the heart of Uzbekistan's mountainous region.
